As a shambling mound rose from the muck so shall an earth elemental rise from the floor.
Subdolus uses his eye's ability to create an earth elemental between the party and the nearing hobgoblins.

"Ouch," grumbles Cadellin as he takes out the incoming hobgoblins with a lightning bolt. (The bolt will start a little distance past the illusory earth elemental, so that it doesn't appear to be damaged by it.)
If possible, Cadellin bounces the lightning bolt round the corner so it hits the gruff thing as well.

Calhagn prepares to hack into any surviving, disbelieving hobgoblins.

With a thundering CRACK! a white bolt of lightning flashes into the room blowing the hogoblins to pieces of smoking cooked flesh. Cal is impressed by the amount of damage the skinny wizard manages to inflict. The bolt goes around the corner and you hear more screams of pain (OOC: P&P, doesn't the bolt begin from the wand?). The stench of burnt flesh mixed with ozone is overwhelming.
Something behind the hallway barks more orders and two trolls chained together by the neck charge out followed by another 20 hobgoblins (this time armed with swords and booking it toward the door). Behind them you see more hobgoblins armed with a huge crossbow (perhaps a balista). Initiaitve: Monsters 4 group 2. The Trolls reach the door in a few seconds and rip it from the wall. Cal jumps in front to protect Cadallin and gets bitten for 8 pts. The hobgoblins spread out in the room frearful of more lighting.
EDIT: OK, the bolt doesn't disturb the illusion. The trolls save regardless and avoid the earth elemental. However, 8 of the rushing hobgoblins move around it and start swinging. Two of these believing hobgoblins drop to the ground dead, believing they have been smashed.
What does the group wish to do?

OOC: No, mate, the lightning bolt from the wand works like the mage spell (cf DMG p.135). I can specify that it starts (for example) sixty feet in front of the party and extends another sixty feet (cf PHB p.74).
IC: Cadellin uses the wand again, taking out the ballista (as well as any hobgoblins touching or carrying it, any hobgoblins in the 5ft wide path between Cadellin and the ballista, and any hobgoblins in the 5ft wide path behind it).

Another loud CrrrraaaaCK! and bright flash. Tiberious is glad this wizard is on their side. Both trolls take full hits and are blown backward. Another 12 hobgoblins take full hits and fly across the room smoking, their hair and clothing ablaze. The lightning hits the balista just as its set up blowing it apart and also detonating a bomb that was attached to it causing billowing purple smoke to fill the hallway behind. Screams of pain ring out from down the hall out of site, and nothing else seems to come out. The remaining hobgoblins retreat out of the room at full speed (2 more are hit by the illusionary earth elemental and killed instantly. 3 others drop to the ground choking on the purple fumes, and convulsing violently (though not dieing) from the choking it seems the others make it back to the other side.
The Trolls also retreat together but head down the NW hallway instead. You hear a door slam shut after a few moments (from the NE hall) and more orders (Subdolus thinks the commands are in oger). The group is free to act. Do you wish to move into the charred and heavily cracked room (the walls are marred by the blasts of lightning, particularly the NE corner.

"Let's wait for those purple fumes to clear," says Cadellin. He takes this opportunity to cast Mirror image on the assumption the party will be in combat again shortly.
OOC: Anyone spare me a small heal?

What do we think? After the purple haze dissipates, should the meat shield advance, or are we going to give them a few minutes to make their own move?

OOC: I reckon there's a good chance they'll prepare for us to attack them, rather than charge into the lightning bolts again. I think we don't want to leave them too much time to prepare.

Two images of Cadellin appear around him. The group enters the small entrance room (the shriekers now silent blown apart by the last lightning bolt). The fighters stab at the cooked hobgoblin bodies just incase.
OOC: I'll assume the group goes to investigate:
Tiberious invisible (backed up by Zargon), looks down the NW passage entrance. To his surprise he sees the two trolls 40 feet away frozen, still with their backs toward him in running positions. After watching for a few seconds he sees no movement in them at all (as if they were frozen). You'll need to get closer to examine the bodies to see what the cause is.
For now the monk just reports his findings to the group.
The The rest of the group (fighers in front) checks out the NE passage, peering threw the purple haze. Afer three minutes the gas disipates, and you can see down a 50 foot hallway ending at a gigantic bone white skull with closed mouth. The skull is 12 feet high and 10 feet wide, and protrudes out into the hallway by at least 5 feet. It appears humanoid (though a bit stretched) and huge with two of its canine teeth sharp and thin and drawn back, like that of a vipor snake.
A search of the room your in reveals nothing else of interest (save a few gps in small change taken from the hobgoblins). What action does the group wish to take (the poisonous gas is clear enough to pass after 3 rounds). You could investigate the NW or NE hall or something else.

"I agree. But does anyone have flaming oil to throw at those trolls first?"

A flask of oil is made into an oil bomb by Subdolus, lit and tossed at the trolls. With the explosion of flame you see the trolls are now hard and grey (rather then the warty puke green they were earlier) it appears they have been turned to stone.
Tiberious and Subdolus move toward the door first (crossing over many dead hobgoblins) and find at the foot of the skull door a pit trap (Sub: FRT 12). Pushing it opens reveals a pit of mud with spikes sticking up at least 10 feet deep. The trap is deactivated and the skull door examined. The skull is found to actually be carved from stone and painted. Pulling on one of the fangs forward and then to the right unlocks it and the jaw swings up with great force. Within you see a perfectly round room 70 feet in diameter, with several long hobgoblin sized tables set up, still covered with half eaten food spread across them (some of it appears to be game, others your not certain). Two large fire places (one in the north wall the other in the south) have fires going in them (though burnt low) giving the room some warmth and drying the damp air out a bit. Three closed banded doors face you. One in the center of the west wall directly across from you. One due south, and a third to the north and west. The north wall is filled with water and wine barrels and boxes (some half open) of all sorts of food and trivial treasures of little value (with much of it dumped on the floor). The boxes are mostly marked with stamps indicating the riteful owners they were stolen from (local merchant guilds, wealthy families etc). There are about 20 barrels in all and 30 or so wooden boxes, moslty stacked. Besides the popping in the fire places, nothing is heard. Does the group wish to enter the round room?
