The fighters spread out and take defensive positions as the group discusses what action to take next. Tiberious checks on the horses and finds the first lightning blast they had heard (when the storm had come up) killed all the horses (which where grouped somewhat together). Certainly they were the target. Much of the supplies that were on the horses have been destroyed as well.
Subdolus moves his stiff arms and legs until they feel limber and quick again. It takes a while to shake the cold stiffness.
Zargon still feels the sensation of rot grubs digging threw his body, only a psychological effect no doubt. He wishes his old gnome boss was here at times like this. He always managed to say just the right thing. Zargon walks over picks up the barnacle in his fingers and crushes it in his hand. "Just in case" he says to the others.
Does the group wish to investigate the bodies you see (the two downed fighters with equipment, also their are the pieces of the old man and trolls in the cabin. Sogathan reminds the group he has the ring that will allow him to speak with the dead (if you wish him to attempt to use it).

Subdolus makes the usual inspection of the corpses looking for anything of interest. He first does a close visual inspection before touching anything, if all looks safe he will start to check them closely.
Assuming all goes well with the bodies he suggest that Sogathan ask them about the steal box before they check into it closely.

A careful search by the thief turns up a bag of diamonds carried by one (he estimates woth aprx 10,000 GPs) a gurdle of some sort, and both carry magical long swords (covered in evil ruins. The rest of their equipment is standard sort. The bag that was carried by the torturer was turned into a barnacle as well. You have yet to explore the ruins (if you do let me know how).
Sogathan asks the group, what questions in particular he should he ask? Wording may be important.

Girdle of giant strength please! We'll just take the barnacle with us for the moment. It'll die, since it's out of water, and I'll use dispel magic on it later to turn it back into a dead torturer with a bag.

OOC: Sorry for the delay Cadellin stops Zargon from crushing the barnacle and stowes it away for later. It'll be alive for a day or two possibly (I'll need to see how long they live out of the water). Using his magical ring Sogathan asks the dead knights about the box. The message is staticy and cryptic. They refer to the box as "home" and the cabin you destroyed their nest to spy from. I'll assume the cabin is searched by Tiberious and Subdolus. The two do a very detailed search of the ruins (the place got the pajezzus blown out of it) and find little not burnt scorched or blown apart. Below the kitchen they find stairs leading to a walk in root seller freezer filled with humans (many appear to have been merchants and knobles) all tortured to death in horrific ways, their bodies kept here for some diobolic reason perhaps. Two ghouls hiding in here fail to surprise and are quickly cut to ribbons. Many of the bodies are chewed upon and some appear to have been harvested as food (with missing body parts cut clean); In the back room where the torturing took place the scouts find the woman who Sub had seen threw the window being tortured. She appears fried by the lightning (a fast death). In here you find a large collection of crued torturing devices as well as another pot of puss filled with rot grubs (glowing coals around its base keep it warm) tongs next to it would allow one to be grabbed at a time. They swim about coming to the surface now and then perhaps to breath. The body of the old man is found in many pieces (as are the trolls). A wand is found broken in two (destroyed by the lightning boltA), and a ring on his hand melted. In the sole of his shoe the thief finds a small key with many pronges...odd metal you can't place. The half elf also spots a secret compartment. you find a bone scroll case under a floor board near where he was rocking. Sub, do you wish to open this case? The body parts look as if the old man was some sort of undead...but you doubt it was a liche. In the room from where the two knights came you find it to be the main sleeping quarters. Here everything is destroyed as well: melted suites of armor, weapons and boxes (burnt scrolls and broken potions are found in one). Also two slave girls (of high charisma) where chained in here, now dead from the lightning blast. Perhaps that was a kinder fate then remembering. They seemed like they hadn't had it easy (below makeup you see running soars, scars and bruises). The only thing of value you find here are 3,000 GPs in coins (a bit melted but salvageable) and a magical battle axe with the head of a dragon carved on its hilt (Sogathan finds it to be glowing magical and not to radiate evil). When the two scouts go around the cabin they find the top floor strewn about the forest. Many pieces of paper are scattered about most burnt. A few seem to be written in an odd tongs. The metal box (large enough to walk in) pulsates with mist coming out. The door halfway open. I'll assume the two come back to the group to see what everyone wants to do. Someone let me know what the group does next.

Subdolus hands the scroll tube to the elder wizard figuring he will know better of its contents.
After time to think he suggests the group may want to close the box and bury it if it doesn't look like it can be destroyed. He can't help but think nothing good will come from leaving it open.

Cadellin examines the outside of the scroll tube.
"Better burn the rot grub barrel," the wizard urges.

The fighters pick up the large vat of rot grubs and toss it into a good sized fire, Zargon enjoys watching them sizzle.
The outside is of bone and ivory carved intricately with images of eyes of various sizes and types. The tube case also feels warm and vibrates slightly. It seems the type that could hold a larger number of scrolls rather then just 1 or 2.

"This promises to be exciting," says the wizard. "Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'll go outside to open this in case of, um, incidents."
The wizard moves outside the building such that there's a big thick wall and at least 50 ft of distance between him and the party. Then he opens the scrollcase.

You pull and twist the cap but nothing happens, It appears locked. Do you wish for Tiberious or Sub to assist?

Nah, I'll just use a knock spell. From 59 ft away.

The Yellow Wizard sets the engraved bone and ivory tube against a fallen branch, places a lantern near by (as it is already night) and walks back to the group. When he casts the knock spell you see the tubes cap shake a moment and then pop off. Seconds later, something black like inky smoke poors out from the mouth of the tube in huge gushes (even in the din of the darkening forest, this blackness is visible as niether moonlight nor the glow of the small fires about the area can penetrate it). Silently it fills the area around the tube forming a fuzzy black cloud roughly sphere shaped hovering a few feet from the ground. Cadellin is glad to have gotten back. After about 30 seconds the wavering black cloud starts to move rapidly toward the group. You can act first, what do you wish to do?

"Not a d**ned thing about that looks good."
Knowing when sword & shield are likely useless, Cal stands *behind* Cadellin & Sog for a change.

What about Subdolus and Tiberious (Sog cast a light spell at it, but it too is engulfed).
