I have always thought that this spell would work with any club like piece of wood found outdoors, and that no weapons prof. in club was needed by the druid to be able to use it effectively.
Is this the case, or must the druid be proficiant in club (or take the normal minus to hit for druids using non prof weapons) and use a real club (rather then a solid stick he might pick up on a wooded trail)

Well, weapon proficencies aren't used in the play by post game, so it's not a factor for your character.

The spell description specifies an "oaken club" as a material component, so I'd personally rule that the druid needs a piece of oak (and no other wood but oak) which is at least two and a half feet long and at least one and a half inches in diameter, but no more than four feet long and no more than four inches in diameter.
There's nothing in the spell description about weapon proficiencies, so I'd say that if the druid wasn't proficient in "club" then he takes the penalty.

Thats the way we went, need the weap. prof. which is a small sacrifice but guarantees the Druid a +1 Mag. weapon when needed at 1st level... granted only for the next round... but still.
