Was ultra vision something that was 1E, or did it come afterward in some later edition ? What if any monsters see in ultra vision?
Ultra - UV light Infra- heat
Also, wasn't there a magical device that existed in 1E that allowed one to see in ultravision (perhaps in UA) capable of detecting faint amounts of UV light missed by normal eyes?

Ultravision is mentioned/described in 1E (in the PH and DMG), but very few creatures (no PC races) are listed as having it. Ultravision allows those who have it to see outdoors at night as if it were twilight, but doesn't give any bonus underground. Personally I suspect it was included as an afterthought because someone (maybe Gygax, maybe someone else) thought "hey, if there's infravision I bet there must be ultravision too!"
Actually thinking about it, though, Ultravision is probably more appropriate for elves than infravision. Would make them a lot less useful in dungeons, though...

I never liked "ultravision". It always reminded me of Ultra Boy from the Legion of Superheroes (DC Comics). And I never cared for the "scientific" explanation of infravision, because it opened the door to all sorts of scientific debate. So we just used infravision as in "you can see and read in the dark" kinda thing.
