Does anyone know who (or what class) the guys on the cover of the players handbook are supposed to be? Some classes are obvious (thieves, fighters), others I'm not so sure about (the old guy with the staff might be a MU or a monk posbl. And the guy in the red cape carrying the chest seems like some bad a$$.

I have always wondered...what class is the guy on the back cover helping the fighter carry a chest?
He has a cape and no armour or visible weapon. Magician....hard to beleive he would be engaging in such menial labor. Cleric? No armour. Also he does not seem to be hanging out with the thieves.
Who is this guy and why do I feel I would want him on my side?

Man I thought someone would have some inside information on this. Was it just made up by the artists (PH and DMG), I know the city of Brass, but always thought this might actually be a depiction of some mega game that really played out in Gary's basement.
Actually we thought about having my wife (who is an artist and doesn't play) illustrate our games as we played, drawing the cooler battles, fat chance of that. But it would be cool to have someone record all the glory. Moral : marry a gamer.

A while back, Gary coyly mentioned that one of those guys was supposed to represent him but he never specified sort of hinting that it should be easy to guess. (The old wizard?)
So the others could be some of the Dungeon Hobby Shop/TSR crew.
Gary also commented to me that Dave Trampier's characters mostly resembled Dave.
