Did the DMG or PH cover in any detail how to deal with a monster attacking a sleeping party? I realize that guards set out around camp reduce the chance of a group being taken by surprise, but are those asleep able to react in the same round as their guards if warned? What if a Tiger that detected the group and its guard jumped into camp and attacked a sleeping group member. The guard roles and is not surprised, and wins initiative (say rolling a 6 while the DM roles a 1 for the tiger). I can see the guard acting and calling the group to awaken, but what about those sleeping, is this covered? How long must they wait before they can act?
