Subdolus will throw daggers at two of the approaching arachnids.

Calhagn disengages from his back-breaking, and obviously futile, task to attack spiders with his sword.

Hearing the alarm Cal grabs shield and sword and runs back down to find 2 giant spiders at the threshold heading his way. He swings but misses the nimble beasts with a 3. Subdolus back in the evil library hits with one of his daggers (2,18) doing 3 pts damage.
OOC: So just need to see what Tiberious, Emeranic and Zargon want to do.

With his longsword, Zargon chops viciously at the spiders until all are dead. The loss of his employer has evidently traumatized the fighter.
(And yes, when the coast is clear, Zargon will go back for Miles's body.)

Ermanaric turns and chops one in mid air in half. Zargon swings at one near him and likewise cuts it down the middle, his sword glowing wildly. I'll assume Tiberious jumps ontop of one of the book cases (they are 4 feet from the cieling) and throws 2 daggers. One hits and finishes off the one hit by Sub.
Counter: 2 jump at Calhagan in the stairwell but smash into his uplifted shield and fall back to the floor. Of the rest 2 are on Em, 2 Zargon, 2 Smythus, 1 Sog, and 1 Cadellin. Of those only Smythus and Cadellin are bitten. Smythus shakes off the venom, but Cadellin turns purple and falls to the ground unconscious and frothing at the mouth.
Initiative: Monsters 5, group 2 (This round the 6 effected by the slow spell will be able to attack, 3 more reach Zargon, 2 Emeranic and another Sog, while the one on Cadellin quickly scuttles up the bookshelf and reaches Tiberious.
Zargon is bitten by 2 and drops to the ground (failing on the second with a 2 save) you also take 4 pts damage. Emeranic is bitten by 1 for 3 pts but manages to saves. Sog is also bitten but saves (taking 1 pt damage), Both miss Calhagan and Tiberious avoids being hit as well. Smythus is bitten once and saves on the dot (thank the gods for that).
So Zargon and Cadellin are down, and you have killed 6 so far: 3 by Sog and his staff, and 3 more by the rest; 6 are still slowed (so next round only 4 will be able to attack at this point) groups counter attack.

Not being directly engaged by any of the arachnids Subdolus draws his sling and fires a bullet at the closest.

Calhagn presses his attack down the stairs, taking a swipe at each spider.

The group destroys the large spiders in the next 2 rounds without being bitten. Tiberious kills 3, Subdolus and Sog 1 a piece and the fighters clean up the rest, sending legs and sickly black body parts flying in a mad furry.
Smythus casts slow poison on Zargon and nuetralize poison on Cadellin. Smythus eventually is able to cast Nuetralize poison on Zargon (who requires Sogs slow poison as well) and both live (though Zargon comes close to death). The rest of the party heals up and rememorizes spells waiting for Zargon to recover. A day passes and the group can continue up the shaft past the bars (though you'll need to clear the way of spider webs as you go). How do you wish to procede?

Maybe we could use a torch to burn our way through. I volunteer to go first, unless anyone objects.

Ermanaric climbs back up the rope clearing away the sticky dangling webs as he goes. Once he reaches the bars Subdolus and Tiberious must take the lead as the angle is too steep for the fighter to climb. Subdolus and Tiberoius move at a diagonal heading south up the shaft. After travelling a ways (maybe 50 feet) you find the small crack (on the east wall of the shaft) described earlier to Subdolus by his rat friend Thin Tail (about 10 inces tall and 5 wide).
A breeze blows threw this jagged hole into pitch blackness, giving you chill bumps. After listening for noise for several minutes and hearing none, and then peering out the crack a bit with infravision with no luck, the thief risks a bit of light. The light reveals a room or wide passage about 20 feet across (though the length or heigth can't be determined from this small crack). The floor to this room appears cobbled and dusty, covered in fallen rubble and many white and grey bone fragments (though its difficult to tell if their humanoid). Subdolus notices the wall seperating your shaft from this room beyond is less then a foot thick. You get the impression that you might be able to smash threw with hammers and chisels in a few hours.
For now you leave it and continue upward another 200 feet. The 2 scouts reach an area that opens up into a 15' square 20 foot tall room with 6 smaller shafts (another like yours on the ground 5 feet from you; 2 in the center of the right and left walls each and 2 on the ceiling leading up (perhaps other ventilation shafts or chimneys you think). Floating above your heads in spider webbing is the main nest where you suspect the large spiders dropped from. Another 6 nasty "mother?" spiders are spotted by the thief, but these seem to stay in the vast spider web, each covered in dozens of smaller baby spiders which move about them for protection. Also you spot 5 large leather brown egg sacks next to them, which they seem to be protecting. The floor to this junction room is littered in spider droppings, a few dead large spiders (along with pieces of many others) and old husks of former victims (mostly animal but you count at least a dozen humanoid ranging from orc to dwarf to human). Some of these skeletons still have on old rusty armor and equipment, and you see the occasional glint of coins on the ground. Dangling 15 feet up in midair you see more recent prey wrapped up in spindals.
What would you like to do? The scouts get everyone up a rope safely (as the spiders above seem to be holding fast, you can act first).

Tossed torches do burn the webbing slightly, but eventually you find 2 flasks of oil are needed to do a complete job as well as a missile barage. Any arrows used up are replaced by a quiver of usable long bow arrows (49) near a broken long bow. You find at least 10 husks of orc as well as 3 elf, 4 dwarf and 9 human. The bodies are heavily covered in dust and have been here for centuries you think. The more recent spindles contain giant rats, large scorpians, huge bats, and other fowl beats. Also, 2 well drained humanoid are found both less then a month old you think. One is of a goblin in chain and the other a human in jester clothing (wearing a small dagger of no great value).
All told the group finds 120 GPs woth of coin (plus change), a lock picking kit (on the jester) and 3 long swords, 2 daggers (all elven) which could be cleaned up, everything else is rusted rotten and useless. Smythus casts detect magic and finds nothing glowing. After spending a few hours doing a careful search the party moves on. To make a long story short each of the other passages quickly become too narrow for a human to pass as they split off multiple times, even the ones going up (though apparently these large spiders could use them to move about). It seems for the moment the only course of action would be magic (to shrink you somehow), returning to the evil library and clear the stairway of debree, or to smash down the wall where you found the crack and room beyond. Sog and Smythus inform the group that the work could be done silently with their silence spells. If there's another course of action you'd like to try let me know. BTW, the group has several hammers and picks between them (from the climbing/mountaineering equipment you brought along).
