Master---is Darian recovered enough to use Pick Pocket if he wanted to? Yes, I won't worry about keeping track of which day is which when you are in the keep, as long as you shell out the money for the neccssary time to recover.

. Once that's done I'll go to the tavern and make some inquiries with the barkeep regarding my interest in hiring some bodyguards/men-at-arms and if he knows of anybody hereabouts seeking such employment. I also try and feel out his feelings towards any such people, steering clear of any that the barkeep deems untrustworthy or 'bad people.' The barkeep mentions that currently, only the five men talking to finrod are looking for work. The seem to be an ok lot, they just got in yesterday. There is a mercenary, by the name of Bronson, that usally comes to the keep looking for work. He hasn't been around for a couple of days. No one knows much about him, but he has never caused any trouble.

Master, what kind of armor and weapons do they have, and what races are they? They are all human. They aren't wearing any armor or equipment, just their swords at their sides.

"Porter?" says Gorthakh with a frown. Then, "Oh. Yeah. Okay." He strides up to the bar and belches to attract the barmaid's attention. "Oi. Yoo. Breeder. Gimme ... one, two, free, fore, errr... about fourteen pints of dat weak piss wot yoo hoomies fink is beer." That will be 14 silver, sir.

Darian goes back to the serving wench and inquires if any of the Keep's clerics ever come into this tavern or if she is freinds with any of them. Syndey Selway comes to the tavern quite a bit. He's always talking to the staff and patrons. Everyone in the keep likes him.

The mercenaries eyes light up as Gorthak puts in his order.
"Well that is an awful lot of beer for your porter to drink himself"

We have been working in the Ulek militia these past 6 months. We have been clearing the trade routes of brigands, but the pay stinks. Now that our term is over, we wanted to look for a better paying job out here.

"Gorthakh, bring the drinks!" We have to be careful with him, he could down those flagons faster then you coud blink.
So, your looking for good pay. Well, tell me, what were the malita paying you. Surely we can do better. Assuming Gorthakh brings the drinks (or directs the barmaid to) I ask Gorthakh to pass the drinks around.
Once the men tell us what their pay was, I direct them to talk to Melora our "treasurer" to work out a deal, suggesting some of their pay be made up front in the form of some wooden shields, spears (or light armor). I trust her combined abilities of both mental and feminine persuasion to bargain the lowest price. I stay active in the conversation though, to assist in reducing any reluctance on their part.
Hopefully Melora's deal will include most of the pay after we return (to reduce the chance of a double cross).
Once a deal is struck I lift my glass, making sure everyone in the party has one in hand, "Let us drink to our future relationship, may we find both glory, and wealth"!

My guess is they were paid 1 g.p. per month in the militia. They already have swords so we won't have to provide those. We can provide wooden shields and spears plus up to 3 g.p. apiece -- one up front, one after the first successful expedition, one at the end of the month (the initial offer is the equipment only up front and 2 g.p. later, if they're reluctant this becomes equipment + 1 g.p. up front and 1 g.p. later, and only after that the full 3 g.p.). I make it understood through innuendo that all of our money is stored in the bank in the Keep so if they return here without us they won't get paid. We can't afford to provide armor up front (can we? I'm blanking on equipment costs...) but since we're looking to engage against the evil humanoids hereabouts they will probably have chances to upgrade their shields, armor, and weapons from recovered loot. (Aside: was their anything in the armory of the druid cave that would be usable for these guys -- shields or helmets, perhaps? -- if so we throw that into the offer as well...)

OOC: I believe padded is 4gp, leather is 5gp, and studded leather is 15gp.

Gorthakh, who is handing round the beer as directed, pauses for a moment.
"Wot weapons are yoo trained in, hoomies?" he asks, his brow wrinkling.

The group balks at just equipment up front. They are wiling to work for equipment and one gold up front, and one gold later, but they make it quite clear they expect to find more equipment. I assume this is for a full month's services. By the time you are ready to go, there will be about 9 days left in this month. None of the weapons in the druid cave are usable, nor the armor.
