First priority is to arrange lodging for 5 days (unless that's already been assumed). We need to inquire (discreetly!) to find out if there's a gem/jewelry merchant in the Keep -- we can ask the innkeeper and/or the banker. I also want to check in with the Corporal of the Watch whom I gave the report to last time to find out if there's any news (and insinuate that I'd still like a meeting with the Castellan if possible). Lastly I want to inquire in the tavern if there are any mercenary men-at-arms looking for work, and what they'd expect by way of wages. Obviously whether we hire anybody or not will depend on how much money we're able to get for that non-pearl stone. And of course the whole time I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for any interesting new faces or other intriguing goings-on within the Keep. Who are the other people staying at the inn with us?

Finrod will spend this time training his dog further. He will immediately memorize 4 speak with animal spells and work with the dog on tracking scents and non-verbal commands related to combat (esp. a command to protect an individual I point to, esp. Melora. I suggest to her to befriend the dog if this will help (petting and feeding). I also attempt to teach the dog how to act as a guard, not barking but silently getting our attention (if possible a light nip or scratch, if that won't work a low growl).
Finrod also advertises his services as an animal trainer. If any work comes up (and it pays descent) I will memorize more speak with animal spells and assist in animal training. I esp. solicite the military and guilds. 2 days before Darian and Krago are recovered he will memorize 2 entangle 2 fairyfire and 1 spk.

Darian will try to hook up with any available tavern wenches. He will play the injured card to the fullest.
He will also, if succesful, see if he can learn anything of interest from the wench....perhaps some interesting local rumors or gossip.

Finrod reminds Darian that our clerics do not yet have the ability to cure disease.

Upon recovering from the group's travels in the safety of the keep, Gerto awakens feeling more hardy. He's found life adventuring will callous the skin and tighten the muscles more than prayer and mass. Gerto waits until the jewel is appraised and Inn arrangements are made so he may properly tithe his share then resupply.

Krago is in a dour mood considering the lack of success of the recent expedition. Injured once again, he is depressed at his lack of abililty to fight effectively.
To get over this, he suggests that Finrod and Melora attempt to judge the value of the stone by finding similar stones within the keeps. Perhaps Finrod can let word out that he is looking to buy his lady a pretty stone (similar to the one we have of course) to match her beauty. This way we have an approximate value of the jewel.
Krago will also see if there are any other dwarves or miners in the keep who may recognize the stone by the description.

Axe--I will be away until next Tuesday. I would be glad if you could again assume the role of Darian for me. You know the routine....scout, backstab, and grab what he can! Heroics only if called for!
Thanks.

No problem. Darian starts looking for the hottest chick in the tavern (thats not occupide). He will hobble over, stick his bandaged limb on the table and start in about the dangers of adventure....

There's a lot here so I’ll cover things a little at a time. 5 gp should cover expenses until you are rested up to go out again.
Most people you talk to don't think the stone is very valuable. The banker can exchange small quantities of gems for coins, and vice versa. The banker offers you 90 gp for the gem. Larger quantities will need to be sold to a merchant. There is a jeweler currently living in one of the private apartments.

Using Krago's plan: " Perhaps Finrod can let word out that he is looking to buy his lady a pretty stone (similar to the one we have of course) to match her beauty."
Finrod and Melora (once she's done with her thing) dust off and head over to the Jewelers residence. We'll try to dress the part if possible. If he has none that match, ask how much something like this would cost, and what he might purchase it for.

Finrod and Melora enter the jeweler's apartment.
"Oh what a lovely couple. I do have a stone similar to what you describe. I can let you have it for 115 gold pieces"

As Darian is showing off his wounds to the serving girl, he notices a party of five men sitting down at one of the tables. They are all carrying swords and are in good shape. They are most likely soldiers, but they are not in uniform.

The banker wants to give us 90 g.p. for the stone, the jeweler wants to sell us a similar one for 115 g.p. That tells us this stone if probably actually worth about 100 g.p. Assuming we want to sell it, I'll try to haggle the banker up to 100 g.p., settling for 95 g.p. if necessary. Once that's done I'll go to the tavern and make some inquiries with the barkeep regarding my interest in hiring some bodyguards/men-at-arms and if he knows of anybody hereabouts seeking such employment. I also try and feel out his feelings towards any such people, steering clear of any that the barkeep deems untrustworthy or 'bad people.' I tip him 2 g.p., one up front and another after I've gotten all the info I think I'm going to out of him (unless that info is crap, in which case I don't tip him again; if he provides a lot of detailed info I'll tip him 2 g.p., for a total of 3).

Darian asks the serving girl what she knows of the men sitting across the room from him. If she doesn't know anything, using his obvious wit and charm Darian asks the girl if she might "hang out" with them for a while to see if she can pick up any interesting information from them (what their doing in the keep, and if they seem normal enough). Darian then takes out a silver piece and hands it to her, "that will be a 5 more silver piece my beauty...if you come back with something useful". Darian winks and smiles slyly at her. Once the girl moves to their table Darian will get up and hobble over to another table nearest to the group in an attempt to listen in (using his thief training if possible).
