The closest cave is the one 50' up from the ravine. The cave can accomadate 2 party members at at time.
There is a door at the back of the cave. No latches or keyholes are visible.
Skulls are lined along the walls, and several are affixed to the oaken door to highlight a warning written in common runes: “Come in - we’d like to have you for dinner!”

Gorthakh gestures Krago and Darian forward to deal with the door - holding a finger to his lips.
While they comply, Gorthakh looks at the ground, then at Rendolf, and raises a questioning eyebrow.

The thieves find no apparent means to open the door.

Do the skulls appear to all be human?

There are a mix of human skulls and orc skulls.

Gorthakh shrugs, and then indicates the other entrance that we saw which is approachable in cover. The party reforms into the marching order and proceeds with all stealth to this alternative entrance.

By any chance, Darian looks to see before leaving if there were any door hinges on the outside of the door?
Also, could the ranger tell whcih way the door opens by looking at the ground in front of the door?
I quietly ask Gorthack if he would allow us to perhaps check some of these skulls before leaving? Perhaps one might contain a key?

Darian suggest Rendal search for footprints near the skulls. Perhaps their is a pull string through the rock that opens the door somehow. Or perhaps a secret door? Finrod then watches our backs as the thieves and ranger search.

There are recent tracks leading to the door. It would appear the door moves inward to the cave. You can't find anything hidden in the skulls or rocks.
I'll assume the characters progress now to the other cave.
The cave mouth is similar in dimensions to the first. There is no door blocking the entry way. Peering in, you can see the natural caves quickly give way to a worked system of tunnels. The tunnels are 10' wide. The entrance tunnel continues bout 30' from the mouth, after that is a 4 way intersection.

Gorthakh nods in agreement at Gerto. This had been his plan.
First, the party lights the lamp but close the shutter such that it lets out a minimum of light - just enough for the humans to follow us, not enough to alert any monsters. We'll need more light when the fighting comes, but not yet. Then we set off, marching to the four-way intersection.
At the four way intersection, Gorthakh sends the mercenaries to the rear of the group, to guard against any creature which might come at us from one of the unexplored directions. Rendolf and Krago, and then Gorthakh and Gerto, will form the party's front rank.
Then we move stealthily down the left hand corridor.
If any hostile creatures are seen, the lantern shutter will immediately be opened and the party will instantly charge. We may gain the advantage of surprise, and if so I want to close with the foe as quickly as possible.

Darian will have his longsword in one hand and a dagger in the other as he moves with the rest of the group.
He will also glance back now and again at the mercenaries and try to use his listen abilities to overhear any possible covert whisperings between them. (The glancing back is to see if they are communicatig with hand signals).
Hey, the guys a thief, he trust no one.
