"Gary Gygax's RPG Lejendary Adventure is now being developed as a virtual world"
Is this true? The quote is from a 2003 book by Richard Bartle, so I'd imagine it might be done if it hasn't been cancelled.

It's vaporware at this point. It hasn't been canceled, but according to Gary they need to find a financial backer. don't you usually do that before you start making a game?). Their website doesn't exist anymore.

Was it going to be an original game, or a deriviative of the tripe that VWs are already?

No clue. I think they where just doing the graphics engine. I never payed 2 much attention to it. It seemed to be a micky mouse operation.
I really wish Ultima X didn't get canned. It looked like they where trying something different.

Supposedly, in the time right after Everquest hit its peak popularity, there were 100-200 games in some sort of production/planning phase. Given that the VWs take 2-3 years to be made, guess how many of them saw the light of (to)day? Sadly, the innovative ones fail since innovation means risk which deters investment. I'm amazed at how many people complain theres so few new games to play, then march down to EBgames to buy Madden 2k6, Final Fantasy MXXVIII, and Call of Duty 7: Derivative WWII Shooter.
