Day 1

Post by AxeMental on Jul 5, 2008 8:17:48 GMT -5
Tiberious hits twice this time doing 19 pts damage killing it (OOC: see SKA, just as Gary claimed in the PH, monks really are the most powerful class at high levels)
Cadellin blasts 4 magic missiles into the one on Sog. Piece by piece you first blow off legs, then rip a whole into its center causing grey blood to spill out, finally the last explodes on the cephalothorax ripping it clean away from the abdomen (OOC: Sorry SKA, Gary just said that so someone would play the Monk character, MUs are the most powerful at high level).
Ermanaric swings his massive blade chopping off a leg and then thrusts his blade deep into the center of his spider, causing it to curl up convulsing in death throws. It stops moving after a few seconds.
Calhagan swings twice at the one on Zargon who still is oblivious to anything but the pretty lights. Both hit (20, 17) and slice threw the creature with tremendous force. The three spider pieces stay stuck to the web, blood oozes to the ground.
Initiative: Monsters 4, group 3. Monsters go first.
The two slowed spiders finally make it to Ermanaric. One fails to penetrate his strong armor, but the other bites threw his boot, powerful jaws drive fangs deep into his foot! Ermanaric takes 5 pts damage, but manages to save vs. its poison (rolling a 15).
Sogathan remains trapped a little more then half way to the spiders cone. From the entrance of the cone you see 6 baby hypno spiders (each about the size of a melon) starting to crawl out apprehensively to feast upon the yummy shaking morsal. They seem to be at that tender age between being used to mommy feeding them, but also trying to fend a bit for themselves. The death of their mother only seems to make them that more hungry. It looks like next round the six babies will be upon him.
The two slowed giant spiders on Erm can't attack this round. The one that dragged Fletcher into its cone is not visible, but crunching sounds can be heard coming from that direction, perhaps jaws puncturing armor multiple times.
Ermanaric hits another cutting it in half, Tiberious hits with both weapons at the other and manages to kill it off as well (delivering 16 pts. damage...that plus 5 per weapon is devistating).
Calhagan sees the baby spiders heading toward the cleric and takes out his bow (I'm going to NPC you guys to hurry this battle along). He hits with one doing 6 pts damage and killing it.
Cadellin I'll assume fires off more MM (from the memorized spell) and blasts 4 of the baby spiders. 2 are killed by the blasts, the remaining 3 jump at Sog, oblivious to the deaths of their siblings.
Initiative: monsters 4 group 1. The three bite at Sog, 1 bites threw the armor for 2 pts damage. Holly Crap! He roles a 2, even with a +2 to save vs. baby poison, the cleric fails and begins convulsing in death throws.
Cal fires his bow once more and kills another baby spider. Tiberious moves closer and throws his axes taking out the other two.
It appears all the visible threats are dead. However, you know there remains a giant adult spider in the cone with Fletcher in it, and likely babies. Also 2 other cones exist that may have babies (besides the one that Sog is trapped in) so 4 of the 6 webs have the large cones. You'd need to explore each to see if baby spiders lurk within. Or who knows, perhaps more adults.
Subdolus is slapped out of his trance and untied. He uses his magical rope to attach to Sogs leg and then pulls him down, Erm cetches him before he hits the ground.
Subdolus digs threw his belongings and finds one of the nuetralize poison scrolls (the ones you got from the pirate boat) and attempts to read it to help the dieing cleric. Ugg, he fails rolling a 98 RL. THis destroys the scroll. There's still another left. He takes that out and reads it as well. This time he manages to succeed (rolling a 22). The cleric suddenly starts breathing rapidly and stirs.
The group has only lost the ranger to the spiders. Tiberious flys up using his dagger of flying and peers within the cone. To his horror he sees at least 5 baby spiders and way in the back the mother sucking the husk of Fletcher dry. He dare not throw his axes into this much thicker cone webbing as they could easily get stuck in it (the cone seems to be at least a foot thick, and likely very strong). Flying around he sees the other cones are also filled with baby spiders, but he can't see but a few at the entrance to each cone, he's certain many more are hidden within each.
Tiberious also notices while flying around that a large crack exists in the center of the roof of this room. It has webbing in it, though not particularly sticky. Flying up to it and exploring threw it, he eventually sees the sky. Its a 4x7 foot fisher 20 foot deep that leads outside to the hill top. No doubt these beasts have been going outside to find prey, or perhaps leaving webbing outside to entice their prey further into the cave, eventually to fall into the room below. The monk lands and recounts what he saw.
What does the group wish to do. You are free to move to the thrown at the far side of the room. You could attempt to recover the body of Fletcher, or you could do anything else you wish. The room is also covered in husks of 100s of creatures, it would be impossible to count how many. In each web you see where there are things wound up. In some you see giant bat wings sticking out, in another you see a human boot sticking out. By its age you think it might be new.
Also, you might want to reduce the light you use in this room to a few torches to tone down the effects of the spider webbing. You still cetch yourselves being attracted to the shimmering colors.

OOC: Before you guys went down the hall, SKA had mentioned having the cleric heal everyone up. I assumed he did this and memorized spells (so, the same is true for Cadellin if he had used any).
Sogathan heals himself for 5, Erm for 3, and then hits Cal for 7, and Tiberious for 7.

Having recovered his senses Sub surveys the situation, "It would appear Fletcher is well beyond our saving him. Without having to worry about him I suggest we burn these webs before we do anything else. I don't want these things to be waiting if we have to come back this way. After they are killed we should be able to at least recover Fletchers posessions and any treasure that may be hung up in the nests."

We could take our time burning away the webs. We could use a single torch, and this may help us preserve any items worth preserving. This may draw out the remaining spiders, but being aware of the threat, we should be prepared to deal with them.

The hypno webs do not burn like the others. Either these are fresher then the ones in the tunnel, or perhaps made from a different sort of giant spider. They also make a fair insulator, so burning the outside of those tunnel cones won't do much.

"I could use my polymorph other to transform one of the baby spiders into green slime," says Cadellin, "which would rapidly convert the others to the same thing and destroy a substantial amount of the webs. I could also fire lightning bolts at the ceiling from my wand and bounce them around to slaughter the spiders. But this would risk destroying Fletcher's body, so I am reluctant to do it if there is a chance he can be saved.
"Perhaps some brave soul could take my staff and wrap the webs about it?"

Cadellin grimaces.
"I'm afraid every wizard has some spells they can't quite seem to grasp... and sleep is one of mine.
"I do have magic missile spells available, and I have a spell of summoning already memorised. Is that how you wish me to proceed?"
