Tiberious searches for more secret doors exiting out of here.
He also will look, with Sub., at the bone type lever---careful to not touch it yet.

You find no secret doors or compartments. The silver bone lever sticks out of a slot in the wall so that it could be pushed up or down. It is about 8 inches long and is in the up position.
Subdolus believes the lever is not trapped. A detect magic spell is cast by Smythus on the books in this room. 2 large volumes glow up high on a shelf. A ladder against a wall could be used to reach these. Do you wish to do so?

ooc: Did Cal's longbow and arrows survive the firestorm? You said that armor and weapons were okay, but I'm just wondering if thin wood and bowstrings would have survived.
Until another means of egress is discovered, Calhagn will begin the slow, back-breaking work of beginning to carefully clear the top of the stairs.

OOC: I assume fighters of your level have back up strings, and bows and arrows are treated or otherwise protected in leather quivers with hoods and fitted cases. Wood, I believe, can also be treated with fire retardent.
I guess its a house rule for me, I've always favored not destroying everything with the first fire ball. This cuts both ways.

Subdolus, do you wish to pull the lever. And would you like to visually inspect the bars within the chimney shaft (so far only the rat has seen these).

Subdolus recommends they check out the books before doing anything else. If they are hard to get at he will have his rope climb up and he will pull them down.

After searching for traps and the like you use your rope to pull down the 2 large books glowing magical (a detect evil spell cast by Smythus shows just about every book glowing). Once on the ground Sog warns not to touch any part with your hands. "One", Smythus says, "is a text that once studied by an evil cleric can raise their level, anyone else it would harm to read". After an hour "The other is extremely evil, and describes 6 ways to bind demons and devils to your service, I'm not sure of the number or duration, I'd have to study it longer. Once used both books would likely disappear."
Smythus suggests these 2 texts be carried out, as both are priceless. "We can sell them for a huge amount I'm sure". He also mentions, if given enough time, he might be able to gain control over that ice devil that almost destroyed your adventuring party. But it would take serious study and perhaps longer then a week.
Rest within this chamber is difficult, distorted faces haunt your dreams, while iccy invisible fingers seem to reach out for you. You really hope you don't have to spend much more time down here.

Subdolus glares at Smythus, "I may be of a questionable profession but I won't participate in the salvage of those foul texts. I say we destroy them and then give the lever a try."

"Attempting to destroy these tombs could cause any number of things that might result in our deaths...from an explosion, to poisonous gases, to who knows what. Perhaps we should leave them alone for now...or hide them." Smythus walks off.

OOC: To keep things moving I'll assume the group agrees to "risk it" and destroy the books.
Both are placed in the fireplace and burnt. Nothing odd happens, though you think for a moment you hear faint laughter.
You pull the silver lever and hear a grinding sound up stairs, which stops after a few moments. Subdolus discovers the lever operated a secret door which would conceal the stair case from above. However, since the cave in, the door is blocked and can't fully open.
Throwing up his hands "It seems we are still trapped" complains Smythus, "What do you suggest now"? The only place you and Tiberious haven't searched is the chimney shaft.

Tiberious will try climbing up into the chimney to see if he can find any secret doors.

Subdolus will follow a short distance behind Tiberious. He reminds Tiberious to watch for the spiders if they get to far up the chimney.

Subdolus and Tiberious with little difficulty climb the ancient shaft, thick with black suit from 100s of years of use. After ascending 50 feet they reach an area with 10 2 inch bars set in the walls, spanning the shaft, and blocking further movement upward. A careful search for secret passages along the shaft reveal none. A light shown up the shaft past the bars show nothing but blackness up ahead (though you keep in mind the spiders mentioned by Thintail.
A careful examination by Subdolus finds that the bars, though thick, are heavily corroded (likely from exposure to the suite). You immediatly both think of Emeranic (with his impressive 18+ strength) who would have just enough room to attempt to bend the bars or perhaps rip them out. (To save time I'll assume Emeranic agrees to do this) A rope is lowered and Emeranic climbs up (being warned of the spiders up above). With some effort the powerful fighter rips out 3 of the bars (BBLG role 12%) creating enough room for all to squeeze through. However, after ripping out the 3rd bar 20 large spiders drop from above, dangling on almost invisible silk webs. Initiative: Group 6, monsters 4. Since Emeranic can't fight hanging onto a rope (or bars) he drops and jumps out of the fire place followed by the 20 inky black aracnoids just behind him. Cadellin fires off a slow spell effecting 6 of the vermin. Smythus runs behind the fighters and throws a hammer completely missing. 14 of these critters prepare to split apart and attack the group this round, what do you wish to do? (Emeranic can attack this round, he just needed to clear the narrow shaft).

Sog will throw down his staff in snake form to let it do its grim work and then he'll draw his mace for attack.

The large constrictor bites one killing it and crushes another in its powerful body, however a 3rd escapes. You swing at one with your mace (13); your powerful blow nocks it across the room leaving a stain on the wall where it hits (doing 8 pts damage, and killing it).
