Anyone played any of these games? I am looking at buying them, but would always love to hear other's opinions. I just finished Fallout 1 and 2, so I am in an RPG/Adventure game mood...

I've had them for a little longer than that. But they're the types of games where hours disappear and you hardly notice. Plus I'm working, so I have more free time than when classes start.
Both games aren't very long if you just stay on the main quest. The game is probably twice as long if you do all the side quests. I skipped about 3 towns completely in #2 and just skimmed another. There's plenty to do even if you skip all the side quests.
In #2, they have 2 special random encounters. One is the Bridge of Death and the other one is the Knights searching for the Holy Hand Grenade. The bridgekeeper asks the two standard questins (name and quest) then the 3rd I got was something along the lines of "what are the requirements for this perk?" and I answered "Stats requirement or level requirement?" Of course, he promptly exploded in a bloody mess and the adventure continued...

No one has tried any of these games?
Deus Ex Seven Games of the Soul Grim Fandango System Shock 2
How about any other games you feel are good? I like games with a good story, open world, and fun gameplay. That usually means I tend to play RPGs with fun combat systems ( Deus Ex and System Shock are supposed to be like that. Fallout had 2 of the 3, but its combat system was a typical clunky RPG turn-based system ) Or adventures games ( Monkey Island series and grim Fandango ) and games with original stories/concepts/gameplay.
Anyone know any games that fit into the above?

Deux Ex, System Shock, System Shock 2, Thief, and Thief 2 are some of the GREATEST games ever designed. Though they are not really "RPGs", they do a better job of being an RPG that almost any computer game out there that calls itself an RPG.
I'll take one Thief game over a thousand Baldur's Gates or ten thousand Diablos.

Thanks, I'll have to look into the Thief games.
Are the Thief games linear? The sneaky assassin stuff sounds fun, but is every level the same formula? Or do the levels have varying objectives and styles of play?

The beauty of Thief (and to a lesser extent Deus Ex) is that you are given a set of objectives. Those objectives can change in the middle of the game.
HOWEVER - how you fulfill those objectives is really up to you.
I very strongly recommend you play the Thief games on the very highest difficulty level. This prevents you from killing anyone. Instead you have to sneak past them or knock them out - which is much more satisifying than running around killing everything.
The level designs are fantastic! The game might not be pretty by today's standards, but it is still probably my favorite computer game. And I've been playing computer games since 1978.
N.B. Thief 3 is pretty weak, as is Deus Ex 2. Stick with Thief 1 & 2 and the original Deus Ex. All are available for a song.
P.S. If you have an XP system, you may have trouble with the Thief movies, which are VERY important to the game. :-) If so, let me know. I can find the fix for you.

What about Deus Ex's diffculty level? I just got the game Sunday and started on Medium. Should I up the difficulty level, or am I just adding more frustration?

I enjoyed Deus Ex on maximum difficulty. It meant in many cases one shot was one kill against you - and since I was playing stealthy "Thief" style, it made it more enjoyable.
However, I don't think that additional areas open up for you, like in the Thief games, and I don't believe new objectives initiate either.

Medium difficulty seems to work well. You can survive the occasional shot, expecially at long range, but if you blunder into a well armed guard or a bot, you are mince-meat. One shot kills makes for a tense game, but I play a hybrid sneaky/killer mode. If I try to sneak past a level and fail a dozen times, I just take out the sniper rifle and assault rifle and go crazy I played through a few levels, then looked at the walkthrough and it turns out I missed alot. Seems even early on you can change your loyalties. I stayed loyal to the UN for the begining and I ended up missing a few levels. Seems like I won't get a chance to go back to them, so I will definetly have to play again and jump ship.

Actually, you play all of the levels regardless, just in a slightly different order. It seems the loyalty jump is mandatory though, but you do have some freedom as to how and when.

I just finished Fallout 2 officially. Before, I had gotten to the last boss, but was tired of duking it out with him. But I finally went back and killed him and saw the ending. Let me tell you, I was in for a surprise.
I had skipped a good portion of the side quests in the game as I was getting frustrated. Some of the quests might have involved killing a slaver, or finding a cure to an addictive drug. So when I finished the game and the end sequence went by, I was a little surprised.
Sure, I had saved the world from destruction, but in the process a drug cartel, a slaver guild, and a repressive government took control of most of the game world. I guess I need to go back and do the subquests so I can see a happy ending.
