The group approaches the clearing as the sun is beginning to set. It is still about 3 hours to the caves, do you wish to continue during the night.

Absolutely not. We'll make camp a little distance into the forest from the edge of the clearing.
We'll formulate a watch rota as follows:-
Gorthakh, Finrod, 2 mercenaries Rendolf, Melora, 2 mercenaries Krago, Darian, Gerto, 1 mercenary
We will try very hard to keep the camp as unobtrusive as possible. Talk in whispers, no fire or torches, make sure we aren't silhouetted against anything. If anything hostile is moving about in the forest, I want to maximise our chances of seeing it before it sees us.

Your middle watch contains nobody with infravision. Switch me and Finrod.

Prior to the sun going completely down, Darian will ask some of the mercenaries to help him collect dead, dry leaves and small twigs. He will have the leaves placed around the encampment as a (Darian hopes) possible early warning system should something get by the guards with infra vision.
Darian also suggest that people get their flint and steel out (or better yet have a shuttered lamp already lit) to prepare to light some torches. Point being we may need light quickly if attacked at night.

The half-orc stares at Melora with surprise and respect.
"Fanks, Melora. Yore clevver, yoo are. I guess dat's why yore a presti- pregid- ... yore a wossname, an' I'm just a grunt."
Gorthakh revises the watch register as Melora suggests.
Gorthakh isn't in favour of keeping a lamp lit all night, because that would take up 8 pints of oil and we just don't have that much to spare. Having flint and steel out just in case is a good idea though.

Finrod takes a walk around the area while its still light, taking note of trees that might be climbable and pointing them out to the group (incase we are approached by wolves, wild boar etc.). He also notes distances of trees to help with casting entangle if need be. Finrod suggest using a slow burn candle to keep a fire lit all night, and build a wall of fire wood around it to protect it from wind and prevent light from being cast. That way if we oil flasks can be lit in silence, or an oil flask could be dumped on the wood to make an instant goodsized fire.
Finrod helps Darian locate dry leaves and twigs that might help with detecting movement.

Rendolf will take notice to the compass points and areas of approach. He also checks for soft ground in and around our clearing, looking for any tracks that may be present now, or areas where fresh tracks from night visitors might materialize, (he does this while cooperating in concert with Finrod and Darien). He also takes notice to the foilage around any obvious paths for later identification left by possible intruders that stomp upon the vegitation. Finally, Rendolf sets near the center of camp 5 arrows, heads down into the ground, fletchings skywards, in the event of needing quick ammo.

Melora, umm, files her nails and gets ready to take the first watch...
(I still want to know the names of the mercenaries, too; at least "my three")

Finrod (with the help of his two mercs and hopefully Rendal) builds the wood pile. He suggest it not be lit unless it is needed. An oil soaked rag is placed within the kindling to facilitate a quick intensification (if needed).

The night passes without incident. After breakfeast the group continues northward. As planned the group stops before coming into the ravine. The group does not spot any activity in the immediate area.

Gorthakh stops the party and readies everyone for combat. The mercenaries will have their spears ready, party members missile weapons if available, and hand weapons if not.
By pointing rather than talking (so as to minimise the amount of noise we make), the half-orc directs the party's attention towards the southern caves. (He has heard rumours that there is magic armour to be found there, and intends to check this out).
Gorthakh is looking for any cave entrance which the party can approach without being observed by the monsters - one concealed by trees or rocks would be perfect. If there is no such cave, he will select the entrance nearest to the party's current location.
Again using hand signals for communication, the party will then approach the chosen cave as quietly as possible.
If we make it to the cave entrance without attracting attention, the party will switch to hand weapons, and then move inside.
In the tunnel, Krago and Rendolf will be in the lead, the healers (Gorthakh and Gerto) immediately behind them. After these will come the mercenaries, one of whom will be holding the lantern (which we will not light until actually inside the cave). At the rear will be Melora, Finrod, and Darian in that order.
Krago and Rendolf are tasked with making sure we don't walk blindly into anything, with plenty of trap-checking, tracking, and careful searching ahead.

I follow the plan laid out by Gorthakh, with bow ready on approach to the cave and broad sword ready at such time we make it to the cave mouth unnoticed. Rendolf also takes notice is any tracks are present in the area.

There are 2 caves at the south end that can be approached under cover, one at the bottom of the ravine to the east, and one about 50' from the bottom in the middle. You are currently above the south end of the ravine.

Gorthakh indicates the closest of these, and the party proceeds.
