It takes a minute for Tiberious to find a fish (all seem to be hiding below), but eventually a pike comes out of some rocks and moves toward you with keen interest. It answers your question: "that thing floats in the air like a rock with moss hanging down, but with one big eye it watches us with. It causes many fish to sleep and then swoops down to eats us. Many of my kind have been eaten by it". The pike looses interest in you and chases after some blue gill in hunger.
Sogathan puts on his crown and makes contact with the creature. He detects a single mind of some intelegence hiding on the other side of the top step of the pyramid. This mind does not seem evil, only self important. You suspect, given its mental powers, it read the mind of one of the adventurers detecting that some gems were present. When you comunicate with it, it callls itself "Guardian", and it demands treasure from any who cross in or out of the entrance to the outside world. You detect some apprehension below its arogant surface (though it apparently has some fellow monsters below the surface moving in on you as you converse with it via ESP, though your not sure what).
It will accept one gem of quality (putting images in your mind as to what that means) as payment to pass from each person (roughly of 7,000 GPs worth in gems total). If you do not pay it threatens to kill all and take everything.
Sog takes off the crown a bit exhausted from the mind meld. Does the group wish to call this creature to see if it bluffs...or pay?

Is there anywhere we can disembark. If the we can take the fight on land, we won't get attacked from 2 different directions.

Speaking in low tones, Calhagn says to Fletcher, "We could put in at the bottom step."

Subdolus looks to his companions and speaks quietly, "I think we should go collect a toll of our own."

Tiberious suggest the following tactic: "If we are going to fight, perhaps we could use the helm of ESP to tell the creature that we have the requested value in gold, and will row up to the steps to deposit our payment. This might allow us to do as suggested, bring the battle to land. Also, perhaps we should unload some stuff, but move the group apart as it unloads so any area attack will not get the entire group."
Tiberious though will go along with what the group wants to do.

Sog puts on the crown again and confirms the group will make the payment. Excitement seems to be felt by the creature (so its unlikely it detected your plan). The group rows over to the lowest step (7 feet wide) and jumps out depositing bags from the hold onto the step (at the same time moving away from each other, Tiberious, Fletcher and Sub moving to the next teer up. Sogathan is told to dump a bag over which he does showing gold pore out. "RETURN TO YOUR CRAFT AND LEAVE" is projected into each head. When you do not (and it sees bows being loaded and weapons readied it blasts horrid insults and attacks!
Errupting from the water are 12 equatic bulging eyed amphibious men. They prepare to throw nets and spears with forked ends. You win init: 3, to their 1. You go first. Also moving at the group is the shadow of the floating beast still too dark to see.

Tiberious will rely on the combination of his ring, cloak, and thief hiding ability to remian undetected until he can get a clear shot at the floating guardian.
Once he has a clear shot, he will throw both of his magical handaxes.

Tiberious turns invisible with his ring and waits for his prey to emerge. The fighters attack the odd fish men with swords (as they are close enough). 3 are hit (Zargon, Fletcher, and Cal hit, Ermanaric misses) and 2 are killed outright. The Princess casts sleep and 2 begin sinking to the bottom. The dwarf (at her side swings with his axe missing with a 4). Subdolus I'll assume throws daggers hitting one of the fish men. Sogathan smashes one with his mace for 7 total.
Counter: 4 of the odd fish men throw cast nets with hooks and cords attached to them. Calhagn and Fletcher are hit and entangled (failing to save 4, and 9). The bulging eyed creatures begin to tug the cords to pull their prey into the water, but fail this round (but get you closer to the side) regardless the 2 fighters find the tugging makes it difficult to escape (both fail their attempts).
4 throw trident like spears at the group. One hits Ermanaric for 6 pts, he also saves vs. some sort of barbs on the tips (as if from a sea urchin) the other bounces off Sogs armor.
As the creature from the shadows shows itself Tiberious attempts to surprise but fails to. Still he gets off both axes (one hits for 9 total before ripping out and returning to its monk master).
The creature that appears has one huge eye on a massive floating roundish body and tendrals hanging down dripping something in the darkness. Everyone that sees the beasts eye must make a save vs. its effects: INCREDIBLY everyone saves against its bizzare sleep attack and despite feeling a bit woosy are no worse off.
Initiative: Monsters 5 group 5 simo: I'll do monsters first for now. This round Calhagn and Fletcher attempt to break/cut themselves free but fail too and this round are pulled into the water (taking one last breath), both have use of one arm and both legs but are still trapped.
The other 6 fish men pull themselves onto the ice with ease (uneffected by the cold it seems) and attempt to bite and scratch (with oddly adapted fin hands with sharp claws) at Sog, the dwarf and Ermanaric (2 on each). Sog is hit for 6 (scratches), the dwarf and Ermanaric are both bitten. The dwarf takes 10 pts damage and Ermanaric 8. Also both fail to save against the fish mens poison and their vision begins to dim (-1 per round to hit until -4 when they loose vision to the point of being effectively blind). The one eyed creature flys over to the monk and attacks with its tentacles danging down. It hits and starts to suck out his life essense doing 8 pts. damage. It attempts to continue its eye attack, but the monk shakes it off.
The enemy have finished, let me know what you'd like to do.
The princess steps back and fires off a magic missile hitting the one eyed creature and causing 3 pts. damage. The dwarf swings with his axe and hits this time doing 5

With the full realization that the move will be tricky, Calhagn uses his free hand to try and fish out his potion of water breathing, bring the bottle to his lips and attempt to suck out the potion.

Cal manages to reach his potion (kept close to his side in the boat on a belt pouch) and drinks deeply from it. WIthin 30 seconds he can breath freely. What does everyone else wish to do?
