Ska, I commend thee to get on your knees and smile like a donut.
Finrod, I wanted to tell you why I chose to ignore your plan of retreating a bit in an effort to catch the orcs in one group.
Without knowledge of where the orcs are relative to our position, it is difficult to determine how far to retreat back. In addition, we would be retreating in the dark with 3 humans in our party. If we lit a torch, then surprise is lost. The groups are only 10yds away. This is 33 feet. Sounds mighty close to me! -K

Krago---you son of a .... I agree with Krago as to not moving where the humans would be at a disadvantage to not having night sight! I would recommend the following: let them come to us and see if we can surprise them. (Say within 10-20 feet). Have Melora hit one group of 4 with sleep and Darian and Melora will run to the slept group to kill them before they awaken. Meanwhile (hopefully during a surprise round) the rest of the party can engage in melee with the remaining four orcs. If we engage the orcs with distance weapons this may allow one or more to flee the area to get help or blow some d**n horn! Let them get right on top of us to prevent this. I would not use Finrod's entangle except as a last resort for the following reasons: entangle is an active spell and Darian and Melora could not kill the orcs entangled without becoming entangled. Also, there may be a group in waiting or a larger "master" (ogre, etc.) waiting for the "we found something" signal. Finrod's entangle would then be very useful. If Melora's sleep does not work against all the orcs in one group, Darian will attack the one who saved while Melora kills the slept ones. That's my thoughts on the matter, but as of this point Darian will (within reason of course) follow Krago's orders.

Okay this is where it helps to have a tactics thread. Were we sitting at a table I'm sure we could all give a quick nod of agreement or opinion of a change of plans.
I like the sound of your tactics. So we'll follow your plan.

Considering that per The Master's description the orcs seem to be converging on our position in hopes of ambushing us, I don't think our chances of surprising them are very good. Unless these are exceptional (leader-type, or classed) orcs, my Sleep spell is guaranteed to affect all four of them (4-16 1HD/1st level creatures affected by spell).

Yeah, we need to use the Sleep to reduce the odds against us. 8 orcs is too many.
If at all possible I recommend shooting the crap out of the incoming orcs. They've got spears (effective throwing range in AD&D is minimal) and we've got proper bows - in other words, they'll be at (effectively) point blank range to us while we're out of range for them. And they're struggling with the snares at the moment. This says to me that we need to open fire now.

Melora---possible that they already see us, but they may be tracking and are not sure of our exact position. I would bet they are looking but have not yet actually spotted us. It is a guess of course, but if they saw us I have no doubt a runner would be sent to relay the information etc. Also, there may be a half-orc among them beyond 1HD. (As you noted) This is my concern and why I will attempt to have Darian go after anyone which is left standing should you cast sleep.
If they are all 1HD you are correct that they should all go down.
We shall find out soon enough.
Tine for Krago to issue his commands!

Once again, we're caller-less. Unless anyone else wishes to volunteer, I'll do it for the moment.
