OK to keep things moving (based on how these guys act alot of the time) I'm going to assume Tiberious uses his magic and begins flying at tree top level and turns invisible. Subdolus moves back and to the right side of the group and hides prepared to backstab. Zargon and Erm guard.
The slow spell is cast against the black vapor and amazingly it seems to work. Still it moves at a good speed (about as fast as a human can run). You gain another round of attack before it is upon you (unless you run of course). Sog casts a dispel magic which has no effect. Zargon opens up with his bow toward the center, his arrows disappear into the vapor. He then grabs his magical sword.

Tiberious informs you the magic missiles reappear on the other side of the black vapor cloud (now expanding to 20 feet). As Zargon grabs his magical sword he shouts out he sees something small at the center of the cloud glowing evil about 5 feet off the ground (his sword you remember at times allows him to detect evil). Arrows fired by the fighters at the center also miss. What about Subdolus and Tiberious?

The monk will remain hidden until he can learn more of this most bizarre threat.

OOC: I will assume that Subdolus is hiding so freak'n well (and is so terrifide) he won't even tell me what the hell he's going to do. So I assume he stays hidden like a cat (Stranger if you read this and want to do something else let me know).
In Game: As the black vaporous cloud approaches, Zargon screams a war cry and charges toward the evil he detects at its center, as he hits the blackness he seems to completely disappear into it, and his savage cry abruptly ends (as if he was enveloped into a silence and darkness spell). You don't know what happens to him.
Due to the slow spell cast by Cadellin, (and backing away) Sogathan has just barely enough time to cast detect evil on Calhagan (who is closest to him). Suddenly Cal sees the same strange other worldy polyhedron sphere that Zargon described hovering feet off the ground...evil certainly, intelligent...the fighter suspects.... as it spins it appears gem shaped about a foot around and headed for the group.
The Yellow Wizard seeing the silencing effect of the cloud upon poor Zargon, runs back to get out of its path (I'm going to assume you want your vocal ability) but in the dark forest the wizard unfortunately trips over a fallen stick (save 2) hitting the ground hard.
Ermanaric stands out in front of Sogathan weapon ready, Sog prepares to turn, and Cadellin crawls backward on his hands as fast as possible attempting to get as much distance as he can (at this point 16 feet behind Sog).
Monster Counter: The black cloud finally engulfs the group (save the monk and thief, subdolus off to the right). Each person within discovers to their horror that they have entered an airless lightless void effectively blind and suffercating. You also feel your body swelling and eyes feel as if they are bursting. Each member takes damage from the effects of being in the vaporous vacuum:
Cadellin: Takes 7 pts. Zargon 12 Calhagan 10 Sogathan 3 Erm takes 7
Initiatives: Group 3 monster 1. You can act first. Zargon reaches the gem and hits with his blade for 11 pts. What actions do the rest take?

Not wanting to enter the cloud Subdolus sends his rope to tie off on the wizard. As soon as it makes contact he will attempt to pull him free.

A blind throw, but you had a pretty good idea where Cadellin landed when he fell and you get lucky. The magical rope twirls around the thin wizards frame and you pull him to safety, he looks mortifide, his hands to his throat, eyes bloodshot, but still awake.

If Cal can see the "gem", he will attack it, but if he can't see it, then he will sprint in a random direction.

(OOC: you can see it the same way you'd be able to see a ghoul coming at you in total darkness with a detect evil spell cast)
Cal rushes over to the glowing gem shape (stumbling several times as he almost trips in the total blackness). He swings and manages to hit the gem like center causing it to appear to whobble.
Monster counter: The effects of the vacuum continue to do its damage!
Zargon takes 10 pts Erm 10 pts. Calhagan 5 pts Sogathan 12 pts
Cadellin was pulled free luckily, and still gasps deeply and is unable to move as the thief pulls him to his place of hiding.
Initiative: Monster 6 group 3.
Damage continues as the group begins to suffer from lack of air (OOC: this is not a complete vacuum or the damage would be much much worse).
Zargon takes 9 Ermanaric 11 Calhagan 3 Sogathan 11
Zargon swings twice this round, the first blow would hit, but unfortunately hits Cals metal armor ripping threw it inflicting 8 pts damage to his shoulder. Zargon gets the impression the jounior fighter is to his left.
Zargon's second attack misses as the gem like thing dodges the blow. Cal, hanging on to his wits swings madly but also misses as the thing moves quickly.
Unable to see anything the rest of the group bolts in different directions to escape. The creature sensing this moves with Sogathan, perhaps realizing his importance to the group. However, Ermanaric clears the black cloud and runs into the forest to the left gasping at air.
Cal do you wish to continue attacking or make a run for it? Cadellin is now up and able to cast (after resting a round).
Do you wish to cast anything? Tiberious you can see Ermanaric has come out on the opposite side as the rest of the group.

The thing moves with cunning speed avoiding both of your well placed blows!
The Yellow wizard is up and can attempt to cast before I role for initiative. Ermanaric starts running around the blackness to reach the rest of the group.

OK the battle rages on between the two remaining fighters and the night vapor.
Initiative: Monster 2, group 4. Both miss as the glowing gem avoids their blows. This round Zargon takes 7 pts damage, Cal 3. Sogathan lost in the blackness takes 9!
Initiative: 1,1 Cal hits once as does Zargon. This time the creature isn't so lucky and takes 16 pts damage. Cal takes 5 pts damage, Zargon 8). Sog manages to reach the edge of the creature and crawls into the woods gasping.
Initiative: monster 5 group 6. Zargon misses, but Cal makes contact hitting the creature dead on!. Suddenly the blackness disappears, and fresh air instantly sucks backi into the 20 foot space....all within gasp breathing deeply, also the shouts and screams of combat can finally be heard. The crystaline creature hovers above the ground with blinding white light. Both Zargon and Cal are blinded by it, while those watching from a distance can just cover their eyes in time. In a few moments the multifaced crystal gem drops to the ground, several cracks running threw it. Once it appears safe the scouts examine the thing. Subdolus informs you this is some sort of crystal he has never seen before. It is hard like a large diamond, a foot in diameter, but not as brilliant and with many 100s of silver hair thin wisps within it. Cadellin examines it and remembers seeing, many many years ago as an apprentice, a sort of crystal like this in his masters lab. His master had informed him it was found in the crater of a large meteor, and that it had extra-ordinary powers for a wizard though not the greatest thing to use in making jewelry. The value of this large gem (the Yellow Wizard thinks) is 4,000 GPs to either a lapadary or wizard.
To make a long story short, the group rests near the cabin (with little choice now that the horses are dead) and Sogathan eventually heals everyone back to normal and rememorizes spells (this takes 2 days). I'll assume Cadellin memorizes the same as he used up in battle (unless you say different).
In that time the group should split the treaure. You found 2 evil long swords (what do you wish to do with these), a magical battle axe (not evil), and a magical gurdle of some sort (anyone care to try this on?)
Also, in the large scroll case (from which the night vapor came) Cadellin finds a small siver ring with a tiney single silver eye upon it, it appears closed. Sog says it doesn't detect as evil but is surely magical. Do you wish to put this on? Also within the scroll case are 10 scrolls. 3 protection from evil, 2 protection from devils and demons, 2 cure disease, 2 cure blindness, and 1 wall of fire (mu spell could be copied down).
What action does the group wish to take now (or what might you suggest)? You could examine that odd box with pink mist coming out of it. Perhaps close it and burry it as someone suggested; or anything else you would like.
